The Barack Obama Biography

Barack Obama (born August 4, 1961) is a U.S. Senator from Illinois. He is a member of the main Democratic Party. He has received international media coverage for his keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, delivered while he was still an Illinois state senator.

As a senior lecturer in constitutional law at the University of Chicago law school, Obama won the open Senate seat by defeating former ambassador Alan Keyes. He is the only African American who is currently serving in the U.S. Senate, and the fifth in the entire United States history and the third since Reconstruction. The 2004 U.S. Senate election in Illinois made history as the first Senate election to feature black nominees from both major parties. Obama won the election in a landslide, with 70% of the vote to Keyes' 27%. He is junior senator to Richard Durbin.

Obama is married to Michelle Obama, a Chicago native. They have two daughters: Malia Ann (born in 1999) and Natasha (born 2001).

His Early life

Barack Obama was born at the Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii to Harvard-educated economist Barack Obama, Sr., a native of Kenya, and S. Ann Dunham, of Kansas. Ms. Dunham is a distant descendant of Jefferson Davis, the first and only president of the Confederate States of America; she is also part Cherokee Indian.

At the time of Obama's birth, both his parents were students at the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. "Barack" means "blessed" in Swahili.

Of his years in Hawaii, Obama has written, "The irony is that my decision to work in politics, and to pursue such a career in a big Mainland city, in some sense grows out of my Hawaiian upbringing, and the ideal that Hawaii still represents in my mind."

When Obama was two years old, his parents divorced. His father eventually returned to Kenya, and he saw his son only once more before his death in 1982. Ann Obama married another East-West Center student from Indonesia. The family then moved to Jakarta, where Obama's half-sister Maya was born (Obama has other half-siblings from his father's later marriages). When Obama was ten he returned to Hawaii under the care of his grandparents, and later his mother, for the better educational opportunities. He was enrolled in the fifth grade at Punahou School, a prestigious academy that once taught the Hawaiian royal family. He graduated with honors.

His College experience and career

Upon finishing high school, Obama studied for two years at Occidental College in California, before transferring to Columbia University in New York City. There he majored in political science, with a specialization in international relations. Upon graduation, he moved to Chicago, where he took up community organizing in the Altgeld Gardens housing project on the city's South Side. While in Chicago, he joined the Trinity United Church of Christ.

He left Chicago for three years to study law at Harvard University, where he was elected the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. He graduated Magna Cum Laude. While working one summer at a corporate law firm in 1989, Obama met Michelle Robinson, whom he married in 1992. Robinson is also a graduate of Harvard Law.

While in Chicago as a community organizer once again, Obama organized an aggressive voter registration effort that aided in the election of President Bill Clinton and Senator Carol Moseley Braun. The campaign registered over 100,000 voters. Soon after, his talents earned him a position at a local civil rights law firm, and he became a lecturer of constitutional law at the University of Chicago, where he served as a professor until his election to the U.S. Senate.

Barack Obama and Politics

Illinois General Assembly

In 1996, Obama was elected to the Illinois State Senate from the south side neighborhood of Hyde Park, in Chicago. He served as chairman of the Public Health and Welfare Committee when the Democrats regained control of the chamber. The Chicago Tribune called him "one of the General Assembly's most impressive members."

Regarded as a staunch liberal during his tenure in the legislature, he helped to author a state Earned Income Tax Credit which provided benefits to the working poor. He also worked for legislation that would cover residents who could not afford health insurance. Speaking up for leading gay and lesbian advocacy groups, he successfully helped pass bills to increase funding for AIDS prevention and care programs.

In 2000, he ran unsuccessfully in the Democratic primary for Illinois' 1st Congressional district against incumbent Representative Bobby Rush.

After the loss, Obama rededicated his efforts to the state Senate. He authored one of the most progressive death penalty reform laws in the nation, under the guidance of his mentor, former U.S. Senator Paul Simon. He also pushed through legislation that would force insurance companies to cover routine mammograms.

His United States Senate campaign

In 2004, Obama decided to run for the U.S. Senate seat held by Sen. Peter Fitzgerald. In the Democratic primary, he trailed business tycoon Blair Hull and Illinois Comptroller Dan Hynes. However, Hull was soon embroiled by allegations of domestic abuse. As Obama's name recognition rose, voters took a liking to the bright, charismatic senator. He won decisively in the March primary, dispatching the other six candidates easily, and winning more than 50 percent of the vote.

Entering the U.S. Senate campaign, Obama had become a national Democratic star. He squared off against former Goldman Sachs partner and teacher Jack Ryan, the winner of the Republican primary. Ryan trailed Obama in the polls, and Obama opened up a twenty point lead after the media brought attention to the fact that Ryan had assigned an aide to stalk Obama. However, during the campaign, a California court ruling opened custody files from Ryan's divorce from actress Jeri Ryan, in which she alleged that he had brought her without her knowledge to sex clubs, intending for her to have sex with him in public. The files, which were part of the custody proceedings regarding the Ryans' young son, were opened as a result of a lawsuit brought by the Chicago Tribune and WLS-TV, a local ABC affiliate. Ryan had insisted that there was nothing damaging in the files, and many Republican leaders openly questioned Ryan's integrity following the release. Ryan was forced to leave the race on June 25, 2004, leaving Obama without an opponent.

Former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka had considered running as a Republican to replace Ryan, but opted not to because of family and business considerations. After many more candidates turned down the Illinois GOP, Republican state Chairwoman Judy Baar Topinka announced two possible replacements: Alan Keyes, a former ambassador residing in Maryland, and Andrea Barthwell, a DEA official. After much deliberation, Keyes was chosen, and he officially accepted the nomination on August 8. He had gained much attention as a conservative firebrand in his unsuccessful presidential campaigns in 1996 and 2000. This was widely viewed as a victory for the more conservative wing of the party, and a loss for the more moderate Topinka.

Keyes, a black conservative Republican, had an uphill battle, as Obama had high popularity across the state and Keyes had no ties to Illinois politics. During the time when he had no opponent, Obama campaigned across more conservative downstate areas that ordinarily served as the base for the Republican nominee. A Marylander, Keyes had established legal residency in Illinois with the nomination, the only requirement to run for office. The Chicago Tribune sarcastically greeted Keyes by editorializing: "Mr. Keyes may have noticed a large body of water as he flew into O'Hare. That is called Lake Michigan."

Keyes's previous comments about U.S. Senator and former First Lady Hillary Clinton's run for Senate in New York, ("I deeply resent the destruction of federalism represented by Hillary Clinton's willingness to go into a state she doesn't even live in and pretend to represent people there, so I certainly wouldn't imitate it.") led many to call Keyes hypocritical. Keyes often rebutted this by pointing out that he was invited to run for the position in Illinois, whereas he claimed Clinton was not.

After a campaign in which Keyes called Obama's position on abortion "the slave-holder's position" and also claimed that Jesus would not vote for Obama, Obama won handily in the general election. Obama received 70% of the popular vote, to Keyes' 27%.

Keynote address

Obama was chosen to deliver a keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston, Massachusetts, and became the third African American to do so. (The first was Barbara Jordan, at the 1976 Democratic National Convention, and the second was Harold Ford, Jr. at the 2000 Democratic National Convention.)

His speech outlined his own family's pursuit of the American Dream, and his belief in a 'generous America'. His maternal grandfather, after serving in World War II, was the beneficiary of the New Deal's FHA and GI Bill and had high hopes for their daughter, because, as Obama said, "in a generous America you don't have to be rich to achieve your potential". But he charged that "we have more work to do" for people who are not able to realize the American Dream, maintaining that self responsibility is an important component and people "don't expect government to solve all their problems".

He criticized the Bush administration for not supporting troops in Iraq. He spoke of an enlisted Marine named Shamus from East Moline, asking, "Are we serving Shamus as well as he was serving us?" He continued:

When we send our young men and women into harm's way, we have a solemn obligation not to fudge the numbers or shade the truth about why they're going, to care for their families while they're gone, to tend to the soldiers upon their return, and to never ever go to war without enough troops to win the war, secure the peace, and earn the respect of the world.

Finally he spoke for national unity: "Well, I say to them tonight, there's not a liberal America and a conservative America; there's the United States of America." Perhaps the most often quoted sound bite followed: "We worship an awesome God in the Blue States, and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the Red States. We coach Little League in the Blue States and have gay friends in the Red States."

The address was generally regarded as a great success, thrusting Obama into the national spotlight (similar to New York Governor Mario Cuomo's address at the 1984 DNC).

Senate career

Obama was sworn in as a Senator on January 5, 2005. He ranked 99th out of 100 Senators in terms of official seniority (greater seniority brings greater privileges in the Senate), ranking ahead of only new Democratic Senator Ken Salazar of Colorado. In his first few months in office, Obama drew praise by his perceived attempts to avoid the limelight and devote large amounts of effort to being a Senator; a Washington Post article spread an anecdote of Obama refusing an upgrade to first-class on a flight home. In March of 2005, Obama announced that he was forming his own PAC, a move not usually undertaken until several years into a politician's career.

In late March 2005, Obama announced his first proposed Senate bill, the Higher Education Opportunity through Pell Grant Expansion Act of 2005 (HOPE Act), which aims to raise the maximum amount of Pell Grant awards to help assist American college students with paying for their tuition. Obama announced the bill at the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and said, "Everywhere I go, I hear the same story: 'We work hard, we pay our bills, we put away savings, but we just don't know if it's going to be enough when that tuition bill comes.'"

The April 18, 2005 issue of TIME Magazine listed the 100 most influential people in the world. Obama was included on the list under the section of 'Leaders and Revolutionaries' for his high-profile entrance to federal politics and his popularity within the Democratic Party.

I am an undecided voter and I have some rumors that I must have dispelled to consider Barack Obama. First is the whole name thing, I've heard that is name was Barry something and that he changed it to Barack Hussien Obama (why?), second, this whole thing about denouncing the US, the pledge of allegience etc. Finally, I keep reading that his father has ped but what about his mother???? I haven't seen anything about her (although I haven't really looked that much). I am certainly not happy with either candidate but I am trying my best to make the right decision (if you haven't guessed I am an independent voter).

My husband and i support Barack Obama for president. We are in the group that is rumored to not support him - white male and female over 65. Nuts to that. I have waited almost 40 years for America to evolve enough to see that it is the person we elect, not the color of their skin or their religion. He has an excellent track record in illinois and in the senate. I been forwarded some evil emails which make terrible claims about him. Frankly, I think it is time we got away from uncalled for character ination, highly developed by the RNC. I like Obama's positions on oil, healthcare, and global warming. Most of all, I appreciate that he is not beholden to special interest groups. i admired his initial position on Reverend Wright, but understand his need to move away from that rhetoric. As a Catholic, i was also appalled by the comments of the priest who spoke at that church.

Thank you Zupata--and Wayne. My first clue as to there's a lot we still don't know about someone that may some day run our country is when he did renounce Rev. Wright after 20 (?) yrs---what kind of character does that show? Let's not blame it all on the wife. And--they don't mention his earlier religious practices. Little things add up---for someone that may be the Leader and Commander in Chief of our Country, I have some very serious reservations. I want to know more about the man and his ancestors--not just what the media is allowed to print.

While I doubt that I will vote for Barack Obama I find it interesting to note how many people posting here seem upset that we may have gone to war over oil. Never forget this, oil is the single most important commodity in the world. There is hardly a product or service for which it is not a portion of the cost. As such, no other commodity has the ability to induce inflation that oil possesses. I would also ask you to remember what Bill Clinton may have understood better than anyone, "Its the economy, stupid." Hopefully, as a nation we will resolve this question and elect the best man. I personally am undecided but ask myself the following. Should we be concerned about electing a former muslim president? Maybe. Should we be concerned about electing a man who turns his back on the flag? Yes, if it is true. Do we want to incur the cost of universal health care? Ask a Canadian. What are the consequences of leaving Iraq now? Regardless of the reasons we went in the first place. BTW, Bush blew it on this one. Is McCain at 73 too old to effectively take on such a task as President? Depends on his VP. Who can we trust? Maybe no one.

Reading some of these blogs have made me very sad for the United States of America. I am a disabled Vet that served her country with honor. We fight for everyone. Because of all our men and women in harm's way in the past, present and future, you have the right to say the nasty things I see here. Freedom of Speech can be too harsh. And, please remember what other things we fight for. Don't look at the color of skin or religious belief. We are all one people under God's eye. No matter what. If we do not want to vote for a particular person, let it be because we only feel they other person will do a better job for our Country and it's citizens. Our forefathers would truely be disturbed by some of these distainful comments about our fellow man. And please. Check your facts!!!

Didn 39;t your parents ever teach you that you are judged by the company you keep?
20 years of "Reverend" Wright and now, after all the press coverage, he finally denounces him. This after throwing his grandmother under the bus when the matter first became public. You really don't have to look too hard to see his lack of character in this regard. And his wife foolishly admitting that she is "finally" proud of America. Why? Because a BLACK man is a contender for President. You don't hear much from her anymore since the made her shut her yap. Come on folks, wake up. This guy and his family and cohorts will set race relations back 50 years if this keeps up. Mark my words.
Oh yes, lets hear someone rationally explain what the good Reverend was saying about the AIDS virus. LOL The whole bunch needs a reality check.

Correction, Thank you Zubata, can no one else see that Reverend Wright is slightly sided against the Caucasion folks? Hello!!! Listen to what he has preached in his sermons. If my religious leaders talked about other people like that in church.... I would have to say that he is not acting like a Christian, preaching like that. Furthurmore, Rev Wright is supposed to be a preacher / teacher and I dont think I want my kids to grow up learning to condemn my neighbor and say that people deserved 911. Who would come back to hear more of that. ? That shows what kind of character you have when you keep going to the same place to hear someone condemning other good Christian people. Wake up folks. If you followed that for 20 years you must believe in it too. Even the Reverend White said Obama is acting like a politician by denouncing the Reverend. He said Obama is doing what a politician would do to win. He's a politician..
Ive also read on some Obama supported websites, information about his child hood. They dont say what religion he practiced with his family or on his own as a child. why not? But when he has attended any US politically correct school or religious school in the US, they seem to advertise that loud and clear.

I can't believe everyone is over reacting over what Reverend Wright said. If people paid attention to what he really meant by saying God "DAMN" America none of this were to be happening to who I believe deserves to be president. I really dissagree with Zubata because you, just as other people need to stop judging a person by other sources. Obama is one person, not two, so he should be judged by what he said not by what others say or have in connection with him.

I also heard this so-called "Reverend" calling upon God to "DAMN" America. Ignore this and you people are dumber than I ever thought. Obama is BAD for America. His ociates are BAD for America. I can't believe he made it to the Senate without the press picking up on his true beliefs. He will not be elected when the rational thinking people become aware of just who the real Obama is. He won't even be reelected to the Senate unless the black vote overwhelms the election just like that disgraceful episode in Washington DC when the crack smoking Marion Barry was reelected. Disgraceful !!!!!!!!!!!!!

sorry to say. Faith is very important in human life. NO matter who your are, religion, race etc. That's mean everyone can become terrorist either you're a muslim, christian and so on. So don't blame others esp religion. Read the Quran first before you blame Islam. There is heaven and hell and who will be go in it. Every people in this world notice Bush is not a good man really greedy. All he wants is Oil. Did you all watch the documentary 911 at HBO and who stands behind it..? Osama Landen is a very rich man and he can even buy US and he got a lot of property in US and why he wants to attack the tower?? Plse think about it... Read the bible carefully and you can read Quran also and pls read and understand too then you can measure yourself that you're a clever guy.

I want to say, "Thanks" to Sen. Barack Obama for responding to an email I sent him in 2006, and share part of my recent Letter to the Editor: I am happy. Thank God that Americans, young and old, are beginning to feel free to come out again and express their desire to be seen and heard without being stifled or shoved aside. The rich and powerful have had their "field days" trying to squash all hope from those less fortunate among us. Many Americans have been called ungodly, unpatriotic, dumb, lazy. moochers and "too stupid" to cast a ballot far too long. I hope honest Americans will prove to the world during this election season that no company can make a voting machine too complicated for them to operate. Let the momentum continue. I want to join in that number.

I want to say, "Thanks" to Sen. Barack Obama for answering an email I sent him in 2006. He is an inspiration during this time when justice is slipping away for many Americans.
I want to share my recent Letter to the Editor:
Editor,
I am happy. Thank God that Americans, young and old, are beginning to feel free to come out again and express their desire to be seen and heard without being stifled or shoved aside. They are exercising their rights once again.
Scare tactics are beginning to fade. The rich and powerful have had their "field days" trying to squash all hope from those less fortunate among us ... causing some poor souls to tremble. Many Americans have been called ungodly, unpatriotic, dumb, lazy and moochers far too long.
They have been called "too stupid" to cast a ballot during previous elections. I hope honest Americans will prove to the world during this election season that no company can make a voting machine too complicated for them to operate.
....Let the momentum continue. I want to join in that number.
Proud to be from Illinois.

I like Tony's common sense approach, but how does the American voter find out if Obama has terrorist ties when it was impossible for our government officials to know who the 911 attackers were? Our officials with security clearance have access to intelligence and we as voters don't. I pray for Divine Guidance for all of us to have the answer revealed before the election because I think it is the only real concern for this election since our economy is ruined because of the rotten actions by terrorists....f or instance, as Jack asked and not one person answered......" Where did Mr. Obama get his money to attend prestigious schools and colleges?" ....By the way, I wish more people were SKIN-COLOR BLIND; we are all human AND THIS CONCERN FOR RACE IS HISTORY - GET OVER IT!

I am a 65 yr old grandmother , born and raised in the very harsh State of Ms. I worked with the registration efforts back in the 60s.
I truly believe Mr. Obama was chosen by God for this season. My prayer is for his safety, and his awareness that No amount of education or experience can exceed a gift of of knowledge and wisdom from The God of the Universe. Moral values should never be taken for granted. I plan to vote for him and explain to all who will listen why they should do likewise. I met Dr. King when I was 16 .

I also heard he attended a Muslim school in Jakarta. He conceals the fact that he is a Muslim.
He is quick to point out that , "He was once a Muslim, but that he also attended Catholic school."
So what is that about? Why did you leave that part out of his bio?

I will be voting for Barack Obama for three reasons; his intelligence, his dignity, and his wife- I love his wife for what she stands for, I relate to her, she represents me most closely as mother and wife, were he represents what is good about this coutry and it's potential. The Obama's bring no past baggage, only hope and optimism. And as a member of the United Church of Christ myself, where one really has to answer on their own for ones actions, as there is no middle man, I truely have tremedous faith in Barack and Michelle Obama. -Cathy, from Maine

To respond to NO AL-QAEDA IN USA!!
Somebody needs to empty a clip on your dumb! I'm a whore... Good comeback. Did you make it past middle school??? I mean, I figured you were a little slow, but now you've proved it to us all. If your intentions coming to this site, was to open up stupid people's eyes, you've succeeded! You've alerted us that America has a LOT of progress to be made. We're supposed to be the greatest nation in the world, and yet we're still producing morons like you. So obviously we are in DIRE need of MAJOR change. And that is one of the main platforms for Obama's campaign. You're CHANGING already! I'm uming that you CHANGED your name from "Dr. joc cousteau", AND, thanks to me, you've learned to spell al-qaeda! Progress already! Since you're trying to educate us all though, and since you're SO set in your BELIEFS, how about you enlighten us all with some FACTS as to why we should view Obama as a threat. Even if he was Muslim at some point in life, he isn't now. I'm a devout Christian myself, not at all linked to the infidel or taliban, but I do have Muslim friends who aren't linked to those groups either. They're actually more against them than we, for the simple fact that they're tarnishing the Muslim faith and giving people like you a "reason" to hate them. As a scholar, I have researched Islam and the Quran. I don't recall any part of that book saying that ALL members of that faith must become suicide bombers!
You asked who blew up the World Trade Center... Well, it SURE wasn't Barack Obama, so there goes that argument! And if you're referring to Hilary Clinton as the "PMS " who you'd rather have run your country, is 60 years old! Her days of menstruating are probably long gone.
And just to end this, I wanted to make respond to something you'd said: "All of those white males that you listed cant even compare to all of the al-qaeda's that have done suicide bombings im sure if i really look into it i could make a huge list of all the towel heads that have bombed us.. you sound like a hooker and im sure you are linked with the infidel or taliban. "
Please, since you have so much idle time on your hands, do some research and let me know just how many "towelheads...h ave bombed us". You sound like an ignoramus and I'm sure you're linked with the KKK... or the Republican party.

Obama is 3 years older than me. Okay, here is my point. I am a proud White American. I hope and pray that he is a proud Black American. There is nothing wrong with being proud of your race. Any reasonable person, would be. Here is the thing. He and I are both Americans, do you people understand. He is right, people are tired of the "same old, same old" in this country. I am sure I speak for myself and many, many others. I am ready for a younger President of this United States. For those that don't like his name..."OBAMA". ....WELL HELLO......!!!! ! THAT IS DISCRIMINATION. I don't know about the rest of you, but I am so sick and tired of people in this country, my surrounding neighbors, my co-workers....s aying "I AM NOT RACIST"....Well YES you are, when you discriminate against someone for their name. This man can bring about real change in this country. AMERICANS...... ......I SAY ''GIVE THE MAN A CHANCE''. WE WON'T KNOW UNTIL WE TRY....RIGHT OR WRONG? It is sorta like when you were a small child...you didn't want to eat your greens but they were good for you. Now who eats greens and who don't.
Thank you, Americans for reading this.
GOOD LUCK OBAMA
YOU HAVE MY VOTE.......
I HAD TO COME BACK AND ADD TO THIS........... ....THIS IS STILL A VERY RACIST COUNTRY........ ....YOU KNOW WHAT ...OK HE IS A BLACK MAN............ ..SO WHAT....AND AS FOR MR. OR MS."" NO AL-QAEDA IN THE USA''''....I AM TELLING YOU RIGHT NOW YOU WILL GO STRAIGHT TO HELL JUST FOR YOUR FOUL MOUTH.......... DO YOU KISS YOUR MOTHER WITH THAT MOUTH??

I think that I'm volunteering for Senator Obama's campaign because he is trying to get us beyond the hatred embodied in some of the ignorant posts listed here. I believe that things change slowly. yet, there are times when a wave comes along that pushes things ahead just a bit faster. Gurpreet probably wanted to do the world a favor and rid it of people like you! What about Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold(Columbi ne), Ted Kaczynski(Unabo mber), Timothy McVeigh(Oklahom a City Bombings)... just to name a FEW people who had malicious intentions of harming others. This message is directed to the comment below about Barack's former affiliation with Muslims and their ertations of Christianity. First I find your comments to be completely hypocritical of what being Christ-like means. In your comment you stated that "My God, the One and Only True God, tells me to love one another and help them see the light so that they can JOIN me in heaven..." The bible also teaches us not to judge and that people can change- God is the perfect change agent. So for you to encourage others not to vote for someone based on their former affliliations means you do not truly believe in the power of God. He is omnipotent. He has all power. If this is how you feel, you as a Christian should be praying for his salvation so that he can "join you in heaven" and not condemning him for being apart of a religion you say people are "forced" into. Finally, you should remember that the word says, "judge not lest ye also be judged." You should also read up on the truth behind the 9/11 attacks and who was the primary orchestrator of those events.
onewhocares :
Posted 194 days ago
Barack Obama is a once Muslim. No matter how long or when it was. They funded the whole 9-11 attack. Not Bush...the Islamic nation. If you people cant see that then you are stupid. Obama was a part of the Muslim Brotherhood which funded the 9-11 terrorist attack. They paid to bring the pilots here, they paid for their training, they even taught them how to p security to enter into the planes at the airports. HELLO!!! Black or not, that is NOT the issue here. Muslims believe that they have to kill any infidel (any non-believer) in order to have a place in heaven. Many of them go to other churches as a means of buffaloing the public into believing that they are anything but Muslim (Obama). They are not stupid. But we are for believing that for one second if we elect a "former" Muslim into office it would fix everything and bring peace. In fact, it would be the opposite. Do you people want to live like they do in the Middle East? I don't!!! They are forced into Islamic beliefs. They have no choice. I like my freedom of choice don't you? Besides if they are taught to kill what makes you think that you may not be next? My God, the One and Only True God, tells me to love one another and help them see the light so that they can JOIN me in heaven, not kill one another to secure my place in heaven. Anyone who knows God knows that love is the answer, not war. Anyone who knows anything about the Islamic religion knows that they have declared a holy war (jihad) against any "infidel". So if you are an "infidel" I wouldn't be voting for your killer. I'd vote for one who was sincere about maintaining peace. I understand that seeing our loved ones go off to war is not a pleasant experience. I know, I'm living it. However, I do go to sleep in peace every night knowing that my freedoms are being protected. I do a lot of praying for the Islamic nation, the Muslims of the World, and our soldiers fighting for us. I know that my God will prevail!!!!! Osama will be found, and probably found right here in the US. Keep your eyes open, your hearts open to God and join me in praying that the Islamic Nation and the Muslims in this World would see the light of our Lord Jesus Christ and stop the violence. And whatever you do DO NOT VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA!!!!!!!!

Why does everything have to be about race and ethnicity. Who cares that Obama is black? Worry about his stance on issues, his experience, and his goals. I feel like some people want to vote for him only because it would be "cool" to have a "black" president. This nation would be so much stronger if idiots would stop saying that. Yes, I think it would show growth of our nation to elect an african american to the highest office, but lets not make that the issue. Instead, lets vote for the most QUALIFIED. Qualifications have seemed to side step this campaign, instead it is race and gender driven. Think about our country and what's best for it.
On another note, is having a once muslim (I don't care for how long) man best for us? Hell no! What I do know is that we are at war. Like it or not, we are. Like it or not, terrorism came and invaded us. They attacked us first. What is with you uneducated people saying that Bush did all this. It's a lot of really mixed up people out here! First of all if you are one of the people that actually think that Islamic people had anything to do with the 911 thing , then you really don't have a clue except what the media tells you or what you think happened. Bush lied, cheated, and stole to get elected. Then he set out to get more by his own selfishness and ambushed New York and etc. to get what he wanted >OIL! His whole family own some of the biggest oil wells there are, but yet he is so greedy that he killed for more. Now we all know "D" well as advanced as technology is especially with aviation that no planes we high jacked and flew into buildings by terroists. The only terroist is BUSH! He is the son of the anti-christ who is here to seek and destroy as it says in revelations trying to turn nation against nation. The people over there can't afford the basics, but yet they supposedly had m weapons of destruction...the where are they?? Bush is the MASS WEAPON! Then how conveniently Bin Laden can't be found. Any other as they say minority did something and all it would take would be the local police and would be caught the same day. Bush says he got all these people looking for one man, but can't find him...anyways...go figure! You go BARACK OBAMA! The world just don't know what to do with a REAL BLACK MAN...intelligent and all running for president! Ask yourself this last question who benefiting from all the bullcrap that's been going on since Bush went into office? The same that was benefiting when his daddy was in office..nobody but the BUSH family. Why you think he don't care about the economy, how many dying in the war, or how long it goes unresolved? I bet his family nor him suffers for anything. Now can you say the same? We all living from paycheck to paycheck and his wife spending billions on flowers, china, and etc. Peace out and wake up "WORLD OF REALITY BLINDNESS"!!!

I think it's great how there are so many people that think Hussein Obama will do such a great job. After his father ped, his mother married Lolo Soetoro, a RADICAL Muslim from Indonesia. Why is Obama so quick to say that he was muslim only for a short period of time, then attended a catholic school, why does he try to veer away from his terrorist background? Personally, I don't want a man or terrorist who can't even be sworn in on the Holy Boble but swears on the Kuran. He won't salute the flag or pledge allegiance to it. How does this knucklehead think that he will ever get in office? I'm not taking anything away from his education though, the man is brilliant. But nobody said that these terrorists weren't educated or not intelligent. What better way to terrorize Americans then be at the top of the food chain? So you go ahead and vote your terrorist in office, hats off to all of you. You are all supporting terrorism, good job folks.

Did anyone watch the debate tonight? I think I may have to change my mind on this election. I see all of my party wants to bring the troops out of Iraq "NOW" The young men and women who are serving in Iraq are doing it because they want to. They volunteered to fight for this country..To pull them out is to lose the war!! What a slap in the face for all those who have died and those that are fighting now.. This would be a real tragedy to not let them complete the mission they believe in.. I think the vote in South Carolina this weekend will be a toss up but I think the vote in November from South Carolina will go to the Republican candidate.. South Carolina has a lot of military who believe in this war and what they are fighting for.. To elect a president that will in some way make these folks come home and have the rest of the World tell us we lost the war is not going to set to well with our Military..

Wow, when I was 16, I can remember a young Catholic Man running for President. The religious right was up in arms over this, they thought the POpe would surely be telling John F Kenedy what to do. Well 47 years later ,we are seeing it all over. Instead of Vietnam you have Iraq. Instead of Catholic you have Muslim and guess what the common denominator is for both decades.? Oil. Yep, next we will see Yuppies and hippies and people protesting. Instead of a demorcrate in office we have a republican . At the end we go to a Republican Nixon so maybe we will have a democrat end this, Now can someone tell me where Woodstock will be held?

While I'm still not sure of whom I will vote, I'm getting tired of people putting out e-mails with only 5% truths. I served in Vietnam and while I think it is terrible to see people burn the flag, etc. I fought in a war so people could be free to express themselves as they see fit. One shows their allegiance in many ways, not having your hand over your heart does not mean you are a rebel. If you continue to listen to scare tactics, you will be miss lead and should go back into your little hole. Get real America, take these emails for what they are worth and please do your own research on who you are considerring for office. It takes 10 minutes to do a little research and with the internet it is easy. So log on and see. "my question is are we better today than yesterday? If you can answer that yes, than so be it. Make sure you take everything into account. Education, Taxes, Health care, prices and employment. , these are things I want to see addressed, yes my safety is very important but do we really think this great country would allow for a terrorist person to lead us and if one is elected, don't we think they would not stay in office for long? If Bill can be censored for sex, I'm sure someone who threatens our National security will be impeached.

I won't Barack to state in public what religion he is and tell us why he doesn't pledge allegiance and why he used the Koran to be sworn in as senator. It is not Muslims who are destroying us from within. It is we ourselves who are destroying ourselves. The most egregious case of this is the war in Iraq. We have done nothing more than weaken our nation, both militarily and economically, and strengthened the hands of our enemies. How much of that $100/barrel oil do you suppose trickles down into the hands of terrorists? Ask this: why, why, why was there this big push for war? Who stood to benefit and who is benefitting now? Pure and simple, it is a special interest war which sacrificed the national interest. I trust Barack Obama before I trust Bush/Cheney and all their croneys. Anybody who uses fear as a tool to manipulate the electorate and further their pursuit of power, cannot be trusted. As far as the pledge of aliegance, Mr. Obama has recited this while presiding over the Senate. It's on You Tube.

Is it true? I have heard and read stories, that Obama, will not say the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, (American flag). That he will not salute the American flag, that he swore in as a U.S. Senator his oath, not on the Holy Bible, but the Muslim Koran. Is he paid with U.S. currency for his service to the U.S. as Senator of Illinois? U.S. currency has the imprint "In GOD We Trust" on ALL denominations. How does he feel about that? Can the President of the U.S., the Commander In Chief of the nations and worlds most powerful military be trusted, believed, and faithfully followed if he will not recognize and RESPECTFULLY ACKNOWLEDGE the U.S. flag?! What am I supposed to think about his candidacy if any of this is true?! His speeches are good, his presence and delivery are fine, all of it is nothing more then hyperbole if he has no respect for the Flag of our Fathers, and the Holy Bible ALL other Presidents have sworn in on!! Of course, all other politicians could never ask these questions without being rebuffed as petty and petulent. Once again, TRUTHFULLY answer these questions. Is there something to HIDE or not?! Let the voters tell and show you if any of these issues are significant enough to hinder Obama's election to the most powerful leadership position on the planet Earth.

That is where his father is from, and in case you weren't aware a person gets 1/2 of their genes from their father...guess that makes him 1/2 African American, 1/2 European American (probably) It's all so confusing, isn't it??

Obama was born to a father who was Muslim, but converted to atheism. His mother did not practice religion, but according to Obama, she was very spiritual. I personally don't care what religion he has chosen for himself, I'll vote for him. It's so refreshing to have a candidate that has more to them then just being a politician. I think he even admits to inhaling. He's done well for himself, and he did it himself, he's living proof of the American dream...yet I think he understands that not all Americans have been as fortunate with their lives. VOTE OBAMA P.S. I'm a registered Republican and this will be the first time I ever cast a vote for a Democrat.

F or Molly:As I am uming you have some problem with the "About" section of his Church - a) as the Church clearly states it is "unapologetical ly Christian", you obviously must be an Athiest, b) you are obviously against "biblical education", "cultural education", "liberation" and "economic parity", and c) if you have a problem with a church that has a substantial African-America n congregation - a church, mind you, that Senator Obama attended while working to keep inner-city youth off the streets, and in school, and organized voter registration - after he turned down a lucrative position on the faculty of Harvard Law School (where he was president of the Harvard Law Review, and taught Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago) - I can only ume that you have some serious problems. Question: do you attack any other candidates because they go to churches that are predominately white?
The Experience issue: The Senator has MORE experience than Hillary Clinton. He has been a US senator for 4 yrs. compared to her 7yrs., BUT she held NO publicly elected office before this. On the other hand, Obama was a State senator for 8 years, and ran for Congress as well. So, case closed on that little distortion of the truth.
But hey, thanks for playing. People, thank God, are smarter than you think they are - which is why the Senator is going to win.
Barack Obama is that rare person that comes at the right time in history to move a country forward. Kennedy was one. Lincoln was one. Obama is ours, in this time, now. To not vote for him would be to deny ourselves the best of what America can produce in a leader.
And for those of you who actually use his NAME to disparage him - his middle name having been ped down from his Kenyan father and grandfather (who fought in World War 2, by the way) it's pathetic, and says more about you than I dare to say.
Look up the Senator's record. Read it. Go to BarackObama.com , and read his economic stimulus plan, his technology and innovation plan, his plan on Iraq, his health care plan, etc. His economic stimulus plan (which puts $5 billion more into the economy than any other candidate btw.)
It is well-known that members of other campaigns post comments on other candidate's websites to drop lies and propaganda. Do not believe the negative comments you read here. Look up his public record for yourself - think for yourself - and vote.

So Will, I guess you also voted for G.W. Bush and believed Iraq should be attacked because of the non-existent WMD's. With all the chaos and threats against the USA, I must ask: Why are they so angry with US? What did we do to piss them off so bad? When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, the US retaliated with WMD's (2 of them). We bombed our true enemy, however it seems things have changed considerably since 2003. Will are you afraid like I was as a kid, thinking that Russia was going to bomb us because we were not communist? Barack Obama in my mind is a refreshing change from the norm in the USA. Understanding that America did not begin enslaving people, it was a place of opportunity for all (equally). Barack being a Constitutional Professor surely understands the document and what it means to all the young students he has taught. A circle will always take you to the point of origin, that same circle can become like a tornato narrow at the bottom expanding upward to a large slower cycle to the possibility of freedom from a narrow fast spinning demise.

How can we consider putting him in the running? I want a man who is 100% in his right mind who will take it seriously. Not someone who spent his formiddable years doing drugs and trying to escape his reality. A leader in this position must never have denied facing his quandries, no matter how meek. This America needs a strong, and avid leader who answers to the needs of the citizens, not the congressional leaders and media. In a reminder, the Muslims did indeed to state they will destroy us from the inside out. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE MUSLIM WORLD. They very likely have many soldiers trained from birth to deceive and live the altered life until their time has come. By living and training so many, their success is only a matter of time before one or just a few slip into the system. The cancer will spread, and it will attack vital organs, and time becomes short until destruction at the core of our lives. We cannot put this man in there...even his distant ties will find a way to link into the system...they use our own against us.

I am persuaded by Sen. Obama's messages on most issues, but not clear on his stand on homosexuality . If he claims to be a Christian, Is he going to strive for gay marriages in America? He's the only candidate that opposes the band on gay marriage. So what's up? I'm not ready for a president that is going to push lifestyle issues after elected. I would like Mr. Obama to provide some clarity on his plans for support or non support of gay marriages. Where will he stand if he's elected?

To say that ones religious beliefs are not important when they are running for the job that puts me , my loved ones and my countries lives in thier hands is an ignorant statement. We live in a country where you can believe what ever you want. And right now our sons are dying to keep it that way. Remember , where were the men taught to fly airplanes for the Sept. 11th attack! Right here in America. And the men who were born and raised in England , not Iraq, were ready to kill non Muslim innocent people for the sake of Islam. I don't know if Obama is really muslim or Christian. I am old enough however to know this a scary situation for America .What better way to overtake a country than to be it's greatest leader and have all the inside information and deliver it to our greatest enemy. Study Islam. They HATE America and it is thier job to wipe us out. Just think it over really hard. This is not a skin color issue. I would love to see an African American or an African be a great American leader. As long as he is not a wolf in sheeps clothing. I pray this is not the case. He is a great speaker and I like what he says. But I am surely afraid of the connection with Islam. And it is a BIG deal that he does not put his hand over his heart during the National Anthem. That shows disrespect for the country he wants to be President of. Too many out of place things.
Niyoka :

So what Obama did not put his hands over his heart, he ain't the only 1 that doesn't and surely won't be the last, everybody pays their respect in a different way, he wasn't talking thru the national anthem at least. We are supposed to be united not being against people in our own country, that's what you called being NEGATIVE. Obama is who we need and he is POSITIVE and that's a fact.
Zubata :

Do any of you wonder why Obama refused to place his hand over his heart while the Anthem was playing, or doesn't wear a flag pin in his lapel as is customary? (Check it out on snopes.com and you'll see the entire video. )
Wake up America before its too late.
Oh yes, caseman - learn a little about the teachings of Islam before you dismiss religion as irrelevant. It might come as quite a shock to you.

Enough already! Why the obsession with Obama's religious beliefs? The man is running for president, not pope! Religion is the one issue that is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT!!! So let's talk about issues that DO matter....like healthcare reform, social security, America's embarring and crippling dependency on foreign oil, etc. etc. I recommend everyone check out Obama's official website, as well as those of his opponents, both democrat and republican. You will see that Obama actually addresses the important issues and offers ideas and solutions. All the others simply drone on about all the great things their candidate has accomplished and spew forth generic drivel such as "tax cuts for everyone" and "when I'm president I'll create jobs, fix the healthcare problem and end the war"... without explaining how they intend to accomplish these things. Obama is what America needs, not more of the same old party line we hear from all the other candidates.

First of all Barack Obama is not a muslim but a christian and this is coming from an African who lives in Africa but follows world politics quite closely...Ameri cans learn more about your leaders!!!!
Seco ndly he is an articulate intelligent young man, whether christian or muslim he is a great leader and is way too exposed to jeopardise the country he loves so much for religion!!!
Char acter, maturity amd intelligence are far more important than ones religious affiliations... .

Hey Frank, get a clue. We, as Americans, are voting for people, not religions. Does anyone remember the idea of church and state being separate? Apparently not, or the issue of whether Obama is Christian or Muslim wouldn't even be an issue. I hope the rest of America isn't as narrow-minded and prejudiced as you are.

Obama was brought up by a Muslim extremist. He prayed as a Muslim. He is a Muslim. A vote for Obama is a vote for Bin Ladin.

I really agree with everything Kyle said.
Even if he were a Muslim, it doesn't mean we can't or shouldn't vote for him. He can be Atheist for all I care. What matters is what his philosophies and beliefs are for being a good president.
And honestly, Muslims aren't that bad at all. From my experiences, they're the nicest group of people I've met. So Barbara, tell your friends to get over themselves, and they can think whatever they want. Because if they're ignorant enough to solely not vote for someone because of their religion, then they don't deserve to get the answer to that question.
Barbra O'Brien :

Please Please get more information out about Mr. Obama NOT being affilated with the Muslim faith. A large circle of people I know think that he is a member of the Muslim faith. and won't vote for him because of this. I feel people need to be informed correctly.
Thank you Mrs. Terry O'Brien

Senator Obama is NOT a muslem. He is a member of a Church of Christ church in Chicago. He mentions his faith at times during his campaign and he is the most inspiring speaker, regardless of religion, running for president. It is a long way to November, 2008, and I am among the many undecideds. I, as many of you, try to find things to elimate candidates from consideration. Certainly, if you don't think Senator Obama is the best choice, that's your prerogative, but if you're sole reason for not voting for him is you think he is a muslem, then you need to reconsider.

I'd like to reply to Frank's comment.
First off, "Useing" isnt a word.. Second why even compare Obama to Clinton? This page is a biography of Obama meant to be informative, there were no comparisons involved.
Second, The fact that he is Muslim does not disqualify him from being president...its his choice, and as such he cannot be persecuted for it. Are you saying that all Presidents/Pres idential Candidates should be christian? That is just Ludicrous

Well for one thing he can stop useing the republican technechs of useing the trust issue against Hillary clinton, what has she ever done to make him or anyone else to misstrust her, she has recieved more votes than Barack Hussian Obama has ever recieved,
and above all tell the people what he really is a muslim, the old republicans use of flip floppin and the trust issue has been worn out, he sounds like a broke record.

Online Biographies:
1. Here is the internet's equivalent of a very long and detailed Barack Obama biography.
2. If instead you want the quick version, heres the fast Barack Obama bio that will get you up to speed.
3. A section for Barack Obama's wife Michelle Obama since she is so active in her husband's campaign.

Misspelled name:
His name is somewhat easy to spell wrong. Some of the most popular misspellings are Barac Obama or even Baraca Obama, Barac Obama, Borak Obama, and similar to the hilariously funny movie Borat is Borak Obama.

Interesting Blog Articles: Links to some of the stories I find that I think other people should probably see.
